What is the Universal Zebra™ System?

The Universal Zebra™ System (UZ-1) is a collection of tools designed to assist technicians with diagnosing Electronically Commutated Motor (ECM) problems.  Multiple ECM motors by multiple manufacturers are entering the HVAC-R marketplace and being adopted by most equipment makers today.  This is great news for homeowners, who will find significant energy savings.  However, when the motors stop working correctly and YOU are called to fix it, will you be prepared with the correct tools for the job?

How Do You Troubleshoot the Problem?

The complexity of these new systems has caused a special method of troubleshooting we like to call Divide-and-Conquer.  Electronic signals, commands and responses, go to and from the motor.  This information is not always available to the technician.  The Universal Zebra™ system logically splits the signals into smaller sections and tests them.  It can test run a motor in up to six speeds.  It has seven LEDs and three 3-way switches.

The Components of the Universal Zebra™ System:

The Universal Zebra™ System: It comes with our most popular Adapter's “A” (UZHMA), “B” (UZHMB), & “C” (UZHMC). It is housed in a rugged case, that protects the tool, and a latch to secure it.  It also contains a harness and power input clips.  Inside the lid is a place to secure each adapter’s corresponding magnetic overlay card, which describes the functions of each switch and LED with respect to that specific motor series.

Other Components of the Universal Zebra™ System:

Adapters: Available adapters make the Universal Zebra™ truly Universal.  Adapters allow the UZ-1 to plug in to a specific motor series.  Each adapter comes with a magnetic reference card that explains what each switch and LED does for that motor.

Motor Power Plugs with Harnesses: To test a motor out of its air handler/furnace environment, you will need the correct motor power plug with harness.  Most ECM motors have special power input plugs.  We provide the most common plugs to make bench testing easy.
